Why I believe in using the net

by Derek Brown

My background is in publishing and communication. I know what it is like to spend hours getting things ready for print and then the cost and time to produce and send out printed material. I know also that it is often hard to gauge how readers respond to this information.
My core business is Using the Net but I am also involved in some exciting new internet publishing projects.
To me in both arenas the internet is an unbelievable medium. Let me list some of the reasons.

Speed - how quick and how easy it is to produce and deliver your information
Presentation - I think the internet enables all of us to present our information in a format that looks great and is easy to respond to. In this way the playing field has been levelled so that small businesses can compete with large corporations.
Interaction - when you send a ebrochure out people can easily interact either by visiting your website, sending you an email, placing an order - all without you having to leave your desk.
Penetration - if you have someone's email address you can reach them at any time. By the same token they can look at your information and respond at a time that suits them. This makes communication highly efficient and effective because it is geared to what suits your readership.
Cost - I used to be in print publishing and there is absolutely no comparison between the two in terms of cost.
Measurable - being able to track the response to your communication is amazing and provides accurate marketing intelligence which is invaluable.

Others agree

What is encouraging for me is that many of our clients have experienced the same rewards from using the net. Here are a few comments
"Since using the UTN web based facility we now have more control over this marketing strategy. We are delighted that at last we have the advantage of really knowing who reads our newsletter." Kevin Nicol - Quill Accounting
"Within 24 hours, I was receiving follow up calls from potential new clients (my current clients saying things like "hey that's great, we loved the newsletter" and generic good feedback." Penelope Herbert - Hot Pepper Group
"The ability to be able to track your readership through the logging system at Using the Net is very exciting for us from a marketing perspective. It's a real time measurement of whether we're connecting with our readership, and we avoid wasting time using the traditional "trial and error" approach." Paul Stone - Shine Lawyers

It is easy and inexpensive

What do I need to get started?
Things you will need: 1. An Internet connection, 2. A working email address, and 3. An interest in communicating with your audience through email.

What do I NOT need?
Things you will not need: 1. HTML knowledge, 2. Graphic design skills, 3. A server, or 4. an IT department. There is no software to install and no database to maintain, and unlimited help for even the least technologically inclined among us.

How is it inexpensive?
Let's make a couple of simple comparisons

1. Compared to printing brochures
Send out 1000 printed brochures cost $1500
Send out 1000 emails cost $75.90

2. Compared to other advertising
How much effective advertising space could you buy for $75.90?

How can we measure results?

From all of those businesses who have begun using our system the most common response is - aren't the statistics fantastic! Through our tracking you can see

  • how many emails are opened

  • by whom and how many times

  • what part attracts most interest
"Within seconds, I could view the statistics of who was opening my e-mail. I was very surprised that about 30 people opened it within one minute of it being sent. Most people read or passed on the e-mail between 1 and 5 times. Some enthusiastic people were reading or passing it on 10 - 15 times. One receiver passed it on to 75 people - WOW - 75 new people seeing information about my business."

"Using the statistics provided by Using The Net we were then able to see exactly who was opening our newsletter and at what point they accessed our website. We found this information to be extremely useful in analysing our client activity and targeting future newsletters."
